posted by benjyI borrowed a propane burner from our friend John yesterday so that we could fry some food, so I figured I may as well borrow his boil kettle too, so today we brewed twenty gallons of beer. The mash was Maris Otter, crystal, aromatic, and flaked maize, double the amount we’d use for ten gallons of the Fuller’s London Pride. In one kettle we boiled some Target, Northern Brewer, and Kent Goldings for the London Pride clone, and in the other we used solely Simcoe. Orginal gravities turned out to be 1.045 (London Pride) and 1.044 (Simcoe Pale Ale). The gravities were different and so were the volumes, based upon different evaporation rates. We used the immersion chiller for a stage one chill followed with the counterflow. The English ale yeast we’d stored in two primaries for a week was split into four primaries. The power was out when they started to ferment, so I put them out on the concrete floor before I went to bed, but the power came on during the night so I moved them into the fridge at about 3 am.
